Coaches Spot Light Mike King Charlotte Catholic Head Coach
High School HoopsThere are alot of good coaches around North Carolina. 8 Balla Hoop Insider interviewed Mike King who is one of the brilliant basketball minds here in NC.
How long have you been coaching?
This will be my 11th season as the Head Coach and my 16th overall. I served as the varsity assistant for the first 5 years.

11 players have gone on to play at the next level.
What are your core values?
Our core values are: 1) Playing hard is non-negotiable 2) Be disciplined on both ends of the floor 3) Challenge yourself to be the hardest working player/person each day.
How did you become a coach?
My basketball coaches growing up were my mentors and I had some great coaches along the way. All of them taught discipline and hard work. I was fortunate to be coached by Marc Payne who was elected to the NC High School Sports Hall of Fame this year.
What is your win loss record as a coach?
174-98.
What have been your major accomplishments as a coach?
2017-18 Conference COY, 2015-16 4A State Champions, 2015-16 District and Conference COY.
Thoughts about this upcoming season in loaded 3A?
3A is loaded! But all levels have so much talent. It is special how the state of NC continues to produce high level basketball players year in and year out.
How was the offseason prep and conditioning?
We had great attendance this preseason. I was encouraged by seeing the same guys showing up day in and day out.
If you can give any parent advice about the recruiting process what would it be?
My advice to parents would be more of a general statement for parents. Enjoy the time you get to watch your son/daughter compete. And let them know you enjoy watching them compete. We all get caught up in the awards and the accolades but at the end of the day sports can teach great lessons to be used throughout life.
Being that you are a father, what life lessons do you share with your kids and your players?
I try to instill hard work into my players and my children. I am a firm believer that there is no substitute for hard work. I also want my teams and children to enjoy the ride. You only get one chance at life, so you better enjoy it.
