2020 6'4 Ford Cooper on the Rise
One on OneFord Cooper has been one of the most dangerous shooters in the NC class of 2020. He played an important role as a sophomore for Carmel Christian where stepping up in the second half of the state championship helped them win the title. We had the pleasure of catching up with Ford Cooper about his recent recruitment.
How does Carmel Christian look so far after coming off a state title?
We are getting better every day. We added some new pieces, and the new pieces are starting to learn the offense and defense. In particular Deangelo Epps, College of Charleston commit, gives us an added threat. At open gyms we are really coming together as a team.
Many people have your team pre-season nationally ranked. Do you feel any pressure to repeat as state champs?
We feel like there’s no pressure. We are just going to go out there and play hard for Coach Joe Badgett and staff. But of course our goals are set higher than ever before in Carmel Christian School basketball.
How much has your game grown in the offseason?
I think my game has grown a lot. I’ve been working on my strength and athleticism. I have been hitting the weights hard. The overall point guard skills this summer I learned in The Team Charlotte (UAA) organization will definitely help me this school ball season. Team Charlotte’s point guard philosophy translates well in the school ball play. Team Charlotte’s Jeff McInnis as we all know understands the importance of the point guard position, and teaching the right skills.
You had a big performance in last year's state game. How has your role changed this year coming back as one of the leaders voices for your team?
I feel like my role is still kind of the same as last year. Be a facilitator to a very talented group of players. My returning teammates, Donovan Gregory (App State commit) Myles Pierre (Houston Baptist commit), and Marten Maide (Liberty commit) all can score the play at will. Of course I will be ready to take the open drive or open shot when it is there. And playing tough defense is a requirement on Coach Badgett team!
What is your current GPA?
My current GPA is 3.5
If a college recruits you what type of player are they getting?
They are getting a tough hardnose point guard who plays basketball the right way.
Who are some of your biggest supporters?
My entire family, all of my basketball coaches, and my strength trainer Gari Scott are my biggest supporters.
Who is currently recruiting you? What offers do you have so far?
TuLane University and Hampton University are my current offers. Several other colleges and universities have expressed interest.
Do you have any plans to take any unofficial visits?
Not currently I’m just gonna focus on the season in school right now.
What is your favorite college basketball team?
I don’t have a favorite college basketball team . I just like watching good basketball!
Favorite NBA Player?
My favorite NBA players are Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving.
Things you like to do outside of basketball?
I like watching movies and hanging out with my family.
Personal goals this upcoming season?
My personal goal this upcoming basketball season is to help Carmel Christian achieve an undefeated season, and get National recognition. With Coach Badgett’s leadership and the level of talent on our team, my goal can be reached!
