Coaches Spot Light Carmel Christian Joe Badgett
High School Hoops8 Balla Hoop Insider will be highlighting many great coaches around the state of North Carolina who have been around the game and a huge part in the success of the basketball community we call the Hoop State.
How do you feel your players look since coming back to school and going through preseason conditioning?
The kids look good. They have been working hard in their conditioning drills and they have been competing hard on the court as well.
How do you feel the direction of the program is going after winning a state title and the depature of Byron Dinkins?
The program direction has not changed at all. The majority of the program systems have been the same dating back to when I was at Queens Grant with the main goal continuing to be to help as many kids as we can.
How do you feel having the new gym facility will help you all build the level of basketball?
This is our second year in the new facility. We are very blessed to be able to play in such a beautiful facility. It's a great venue for basketball development and our kids really cherish the fact they are in this nice facility.
What games on your schedule standout the most?
I don't personally have any that stand out. We tried to really challenge this group with a tough schedule. Our job is to get them ready for college and we feel that the schedule can play a big part in that. I will let you guys pick the standout games.
How many years have you coached?
Between AAU, Middle School and High School it has been about 18 years total (AAU- 3 years, Middle School- 3 years, High School- 12 years).
What is your win loss record as a head coach?
108-17 is what I was told.
How does it feel to have developed and helped so many kids who have went on to play college basketball?
We are very humbled and honored that God choose us to help kids. That is what the program is called to do and we do not take that calling for granted. When the older kids come back home and spend time with the current kids, that's when you just sit back and joyfully embrace what's going on here.
After your playing career what made you get into coaching?
I know that I am called to help young people. I was influenced tremendously by CJ Johnson to start coaching. And it's something about when you are called to do something, you can't run from it.
Best moment so far as a coach?
My best moments as a coach come every May when those college graduation invitations come pouring out.
Long term goals you have for this year's team?
Our goals for the team this year are no different from the previous years which is to develop the kids Spiritually, Academically and Athletically so they can be change agents in a tough culture that they about to face.
